Historical
Background
Fr. Muller's Medical College is a unit of Fr. Muller's Charitable
Institutions, a Registered Society sponsored by the Catholic Diocese
of Mangalore; is a Religious Minority Educational Institution established
primarily for the benefit of the members of the Christian Community.
It is open, like all other Educational Institutions under Catholic
auspices, to all persons irrespective of religion, caste or community
and is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences,
Bangalore, Karnataka.
Fr.
Mullers' Charitable Institutions had a very humble beginning in
the year 1880 under a banyan tree where Fr. Muller, a German Jesuit
Missionary started dispensing Homeopathic Medicines to the ailing
poor. Though it was started as a leprosy hospital, as need arose,
an allopathic Hospital was constructed and the care was extended
to patients suffering from various diseases.
Gradually,
Fr. Muller's humanitarian service took deep roots and branched out
to be a full grown tree. Today it has become a vast complex, consisting
of 1000 bedded Allopathic Hospital with all medical specialities
apart from a Rehabilitation Unit, School and College of Nursing
and a Homeopathic Medical College and Hospital.
The
Sisters of Charity associated themselves with the good works of
Fr. Muller from 1890 onwards and are still rendering dedicated service
in this institution.
Since
July 1990, the Postgraduate Programme in various medical disciplines
started . MD in Dermatology & VD was started first, followed
by several other Postgraduate Degree and Diploma courses came into
existence. The Master's programme in nursing and Hospital Administration,
M.Sc Psycho-social Rehabilitation and other allied sciences under-graduate
programmes were started later on. The MBBS programme started from
the academic year 1999.
It
is noteworthy to mention that all these existing Medical and allied
health science programmes offered by Fr. Muller's Charitable Institutions
contribute not only towards the diverse health needs of the people
but it also caters towards preparing Quality Health Care Personnel
for the country at large.
Philosopy
The Management, Staff and Students of Fr. Muller's Charitable Institutions,
have been inspired and guided through the years, by the motto "HEAL
AND COMFORT" instilled by Fr.Muller himself whose spirit and
values we cherish, maintain and promote with special thrust in bringing
succour to the underprivileged, such as patients with leprosy, tuberculosis,
mentally ill, alcoholics etc.
We
consider Patient Care as a team work in co-operation and collaboration
with all those who are involved in the care of the patient, whether
in the hospital or community, adopting a holistic approach founded
on Scientific and Research Findings.
We
promote education of the highest quality in the Art and Science
of Medicine and allied health sciences and other related professions
instilling Human, Ethical, Spiritual and Christian values.
We
look for excellence not only in professional skills but also in
attitude and character in everyone, upholding respect for Life,
Dignity of a person with humanness and a genuine feeling of compassion
for patients, their attenders and families, in emulation of the
'Divine Healer-the Greatest Physician'.
As
a unit of Fr. Muller's Charitable Institutions, Fr. Muller's Medical
College believes and practices its philosophy and objectives. The
staff and students of this Medical College will maintain the rich
tradition of 'Holistic Approach' to Patient Care instilled by the
Founder, Fr. Augustus Muller. Healing of the `Whole Person' - body,
mind and spirit will be the total concern of everyone in this approach
and not merely curing a diseased part of the human body or an ailment.
It
is hoped that during the period of training, the virtues of brotherly
love and compassion in a spirit of service, respect of life from
the womb to the tomb, including respect for disabled and the infirm,
will be imbibed by the students. They are expected not only to deepen
their knowledge and develop more skills in different Medical Sciences
but also to grow in "Spiritual Strength", so that they
contribute towards maintaining the ethos of the institution.
