Today Fr.Muller's Hospital has over 900 beds to treat people both
with modern medicine and Homoeopathy. Fr Muller, who was inspired
by Jesus, the Divine Healer, found the need to bring healing and
comfort to the poor and low income groups 121 years back. It was
a humble beginning under a banyan tree. His spirit continues even
today, although the size and structures have grown with passage
of time.

Fr. Augustus Muller S.J., born in Paderborn, Westfalia, Germany,
on 13th March 1841, arrived in Mangalore on 31st December 1878 and
began as a teacher at St. Aloysius College, Mangalore.
He
being a successful Homoeopathic practitioner, sick people flocked
to him in large numbers. This following grew by the week. By 1880,
the pressure was so great that Fr. Muller was forced to start his
own dispensary at Kodialbail. Five years later this work blossomed
into a hospital on a hillock named Kankanady.
Fr.
Muller's reputation as the compassionate physician, drew leprosy
patients to him in such large numbers that soon the hospital was
not able to cope with the growing numbers. So, in 1890 he founded
the St Joseph's Leprosy Asylum, later called Hospital, to treat
the leprosy patients with allopathic remedies.

He
was assisted by Dr. L.P. Fernandes, a physician and surgeon of great
renown who spent his entire life serving the sick at Fr. Muller's,
without any remuneration.
And
to this day these legends of sacrificial service continue to inspire
the Institution to bring healing and comfort to the sick.
