Maggots infested deep scalp wound successfully treated in Father Muller Medical College Hospital
A lady, aged 54 yrs hailing from Bantwal Taluk, presented to Plastic surgery OPD, FMMCH on 10/9/14 with maggots infested scalp wound noticed by her a week ago. She was immediately taken up for wound debridement and the operating team comprised Dr. Aravind L. Rao, the Plastic surgeon, his residents Dr. Ajil Joseph and Dr.Vani.K.Gupta and the anaesthetists Dr. Mohammed Imdad and Dr.Florence (resident) . During the surgery, the maggots were removed and the brain’s cover, the duramater was found to be exposed and the skull bone eroded. Patient was unaware of her own skull bone being eroded by maggots and she was not having pain at all. A neurosurgery opinion was sought from Dr. Madhukar T. Nayak and Dr. Geover Lobo and a CT scan was done to assess the extent of bone involvement. In the ward, the wound dressings was done to achieve a healthy wound and to prevent the spread of infection to the brain. After 3 weeks, when the wound was healthy, she was taken up for a reconstructive surgery. A rotation flap was done and the wound was covered completely from the adjacent tissue and the exposed brain was successfully covered. The operating team consisted of Dr. Aravind L.Rao, the Plastic surgeon and residents Dr. Aron, Dr. Althaf and Dr. Anu Joy and anaesthesiologist Dr. Preethi Jain. The wound healed well after the surgery and the patient is being followed up regularly. Patient is happy and leading a normal life now.
