The department of pathology started in the year 1999 and now has Blood bank and immunohaematology department, clinical Pathology and haematology, cytology, histopathology, frozen section and immunohistochemistry.The histopathology section receives around 5,000 surgical specimens per annum. The cytology section receives around 3,000 specimens per annum which includes fine needle aspiration cytology, fluid cytology and exfoliative cytology. The clinical pathology and haematology sections are located in the central laboratory which offers 24 hour service. The blood bank issues around 10,000 bags per annum. It caters primarily to FMMCH and secondarily to private hospitals from adjacent localities and states.
The department conducts regular student feedback which provide adequate inputs to design the curriculum regularly. One hundred students are admitted each year to the MBBS course. The faculties participate in local, state, national and international conferences. The senior faculty participates as resource persons in a few of the CME programmes. The department regularly conducts CME programmes.
The department has a well equipped library with over 150 books. The faculty are involved in research and publication.The department has over 50 publications in indexed journals. Departmental activities (laboratory) are in the process of obtaining NABL and ISO services accreditation. Rare and classical specimens that are received in the department have been archived with systemwise categorization in the Museum of the department.
