History
In 1952, Lourdes ward was constructed to house surgical patients both men and women. Dr. P.V. Venkat Rao came back from London with FRCS degree and joined this institution in the month of February 1953 and worked as a Chief Medical Officer and a surgeon till his retirement on March 12th 1982. He was a general surgeon in a true sense, performing almost any surgical procedures. During his tenure a modern operation theatre was established in 1962 and Intensive Care Unit in 1971. Dr. H.W. Furtado joined the institution as a Consultant General Surgeon and Urologist in 1975 and served for 28 years till his retirement in 2003. He was joined by Dr.Madhava Adiga in 1978 as a General Surgeon and Urologist till 1990. In 1990, Post Graduate degree in Surgery(DNB) was started and M.S.General Surgery course in 1992. First Head of Department was Dr. Kalyana Sundaram followed by Dr.Menon.
