Introduction

The department of community medicine was established in 1999 when Father Muller Medical college stated functioning. The objective of the department is to impart medical education in community medicine and public health, introducing the concepts to under graduate medical students.
The areas covered by the department are undergraduate teaching, health care administration and primary health care activities in the peripheral centers attached to the department. A few peripheral health centers approved for training including the urban health centers of the city are utilized for internship training.
The health centers attached to the department are as follows:
- Rural health center, Mullarkad
- Urban health center, Jeppu
- Urban health center, Neereshwalya.
- Primary health center, Surathkal
- Fr LM Pinto rural hospital, Badyar
- Jyothi hospital, Belthangadi
- Goretti hospital, Kallianpur Udupi
- Fr Ignatius hospital, Honnavar.
- Fr Patrao hospital, Puttur.
Fulltime medical officers working in these centers conduct general clinics, outreach clinics, school health check up and health education campaigns. Specialty clinics are introduced in urban and rural health centers involving the specialists of FMMC. No of patients attending out patient and specialist clinic is on the increase. There is a back up of referral services to the patients who need specialized treatment at FMMC.
