Chikungunya fever is now a major public health concern of south canara district. The recent outbreak of Chikungunya fever in Sullia, Puttur Belthangady and Bantwal taluk had a major impact on the people due to its disabling arthralgia (joint pains) remaining for several weeks to months even after fever subsides. Considering the magnitude of the new infections it was felt that Homoeopathic intervention will help in preventing this public menace.
With the guidance and advice of our Director, Rev. Fr Patrick Rodrigues, a team consisting of Rev. Fr Stany Tauro, Former Administrator of Fr Muller Homoeopathic Medical College, Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, present Administrator of the college, Dr S.K. Tiwari, Principal of the College and Dr Prasanna Kumar, incharge of the Dept. of Community Medicine met the District Health Officer on 15.05.2008 to discuss the various modalities of Homoeopathic Treatment for Chikungunya and to distribute preventive medicines to those who are affected. According to the instructions of the District Health Officer and after consulting with the Puttur Taluk Health Officer, a team of 30 members (consists of 5 doctors, 10 P.G. students and 15 interns) started visiting Puttur Taluk from 17th May 2008 onwards. We have been allotted 5 PHC's i.e Uppinangadi PHC, Koyla PHC, Nelyadi PHC, Kaniyoor PHC and Savanoor PHC. Puttur Camps continued till 31st May. The total number of persons received curative and preventive medicines at Puttur Taluk are 42,605.
